Gilero pivots to PPE manufacturing, including the SCONE™

On December 3, Governor Roy Cooper toured Gilero, a medical device manufacturer in Morrisville, North Carolina that has transitioned to making personal protective equipment (PPE) to help combat the spread of COVID-19 in the United States.

In addition to manufacturing face shields and masks, Gilero has partnered with SCONE™ Medical Solutions to produce the SCONE™, a negative pressure environment that hospitals can use to stop the spread of infectious aerosols and droplets.

Because the SCONE™ is a single-use device capable of clearing infectious particles in under five minutes, it is a helpful resource for reducing the need for PPE, replacing less efficient isolation and negative pressure rooms, and protecting healthcare workers.

“We are glad so many companies like Gilero answered our call to begin making personal protective equipment when the pandemic hit,” Governor Cooper said after visiting Gilero. “These supplies help us slow the spread of the virus and keep people safe.”

As the COVID-19 pandemic enters what some experts consider its third wave and continues to wreak havoc in the United States, hospitals and healthcare workers are in desperate need of face coverings, masks, face shields, and other PPE supplies. Gilero has risen to the occasion, producing over 800,000 face shields for North Carolina and other states.

This has made a huge difference for hospitals and healthcare facilities in North Carolina which, like many other parts of the United States, have been facing massive PPE shortages since the onset of the pandemic.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Gilero, Ted Mosler, “When the pandemic hit, we felt it was our moral and civic duty to help in some way.” After expressing gratitude to Governor Cooper for his support and healthcare workers for their dedication to providing care during the pandemic, Mosler added, “We continue developing products to protect these workers...our workforce wants to use their skills and capabilities to make a difference.”

As Gilero manufactures the SCONE™, an active barrier of protection for healthcare workers, they will continue to make a difference for hospitals in North Carolina and beyond.
